Henri Bendel
Asked to visually carry out Bendels’ “interior street of shops” onto Manhattan’s fashionable 57th street, Janko Rasic Architects and Herbert Kashian designed a new transparent storefront. The store’s two buildings are unified by the implementation of a new cornice, the other cohesive force, a glass plane. Two porticos interrupt the plane- marking the intersection of the interior and exterior streets for pedestrians. A new office lobby for 4 floors of converted gallery and office space above is discretely created behind the glass plane by transforming a former service entrance into the building’s main entrance.
